The Republic of El Salvador is a country in Central America. With a 21,040 sqkm-wide land area (8,124 sqmi) a population of 6.1 million people, and a GDP close to $26.80 billion in 2016, El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated of the seven Central American countries.
Despite having little level land, the Salvadoran economy is traditionally based on agriculture, with a heavy dependence on coffee exports. El Salvador is the 100th largest export economy in the world. Its imports are used for reexport (mostly apparel produced in “maquiladoras”). Other imports include machinery components, foodstuffs, petroleum, and chemical products.
Its main trading partner is the United States, followed by neighboring countries, particularly Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. China also constitutes a big trading partner.
French companies are present in El Salvador mostly working in the renewable energy sector.
Bilateral cooperation between El Salvador and France is mainly focused on promoting the French language, cultural exchanges and university education. The Consuelo et Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Lycée, in San Salvador is the largest French language teaching establishment in Central America, with over 1,300 students.
