The Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the North and to the West, by the Pacific Ocean to the Southwest, by Belize to the Northeast, by the Caribbean to the East, by Honduras to the East and by El Salvador to the Southeast. It is 108,890 sqkm-wide, with an estimated population of around 16.6 million people and a GDP close to $68,2 billion.
The United States is Guatemala’s key trade partner, in both exports and imports. El Salvador, the Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama are other important trading partners of this Central American nation.
Guatemala exports rich agricultural resources and vast cultivation of traditional crops, such as coffee, banana, cardamom and sugar. However, in recent years, farmers in the country have switched to farming fruits and vegetables, as well as flowers for exports. Petroleum and apparel are the other main products exported by Guatemala, when the Central American nation imports intermediate and capital goods, including fuel, machinery and transport equipment, construction materials, grain, fertilizers and electricity.
Guatemala is France’s third-largest trading partner in Central America, after Panama and Costa Rica. The French-British company Perenco is the leading French investor in Guatemala and the country’s largest oil operator. Close to 20 French companies are established in Guatemala, as commercial subsidiaries particularly in consumer goods, telecommunications, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals and services.
