The Republic of Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus. It is bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Nicaragua covers 129,494 sq.kms, with a population of just under 6.2 million, for a GDP of US$13.8 billion (source: UN – World Bank, 2018).
Agriculture (coffee, bananas, tobacco, cotton) and livestock (poultry, beef) are the dominant sectors in Nicaragua. The country’s economy is also based on textiles (knit and woven fabrics), machinery spare parts, food products, oil, and some chemicals. Nicaragua’s main trading partner is the United States, followed by China, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. The European Union is one of Nicaragua’s major partners when it comes to exporting.
